For a moment, sit back and relax whilst I tell you a story about two very good friends. One went by the name of Rubber and the other was called Pencil. Pencil loved to write and would write all day long. Rubber loved to erase and from morning through to evening, he would spend his day erasing everything that Pencil has carefully printed onto paper.

Several weeks passed and one day Pencil looked at the cute post box Rubber and said “I do not want to be your friend anymore because you never let me express myself with words; you always wipe them away as though they do not mean anything”. Rubber looked very sad and said “I’m sorry you do not like me anymore, I thought that I was helping you and being a good friend”.

The weeks turned into months and Pencil started to make some mistakes with his writing. He wished that his faithful friend Rubber was by his side to help him. Pencil became very sad and lonely but Rubber was quite happy sat on the desk, relaxing without having to erase any more of Pencil’s words although some days he did become tired of doing nothing and often reminisced about his old friend Pencil who was full of life and would happily write all day.

One day the two of them met quite by accident as they were tossed into a pencil case. They suddenly realised that they were stronger together than apart and decided to give their relationship another chance. As Pencil and Rubber reunited, Pencil decided that he would only write when inspiration struck him or when he needed to and Rubber agreed to only erase those words that Pencil wanted removed.

Now take another look at this pencil rubber and you will see it in a completely different light. The pencil is akin to the way that we store memories. At first we remember everything that happened and we can instantly recall the good and the bad. This is demonstrated when Pencil was frantically writing down everything. The rubber reminds us that we can choose to forget those parts of a memory which hurt by erasing them and allowing only the good to remain.

So now you can see that the pencil and the rubber combined are a winning team as the pencil will recall everything that you wish to write down and the rubber will erase those parts that you want to
